Welcome to Beacon!
The 2009-10 school year was Beacon’s first, and we have been astonished by the growth of our program and the achievements of our students. These last weeks have been a whirlwind of activity, from the talent show and student presentations to AP exams, field trips and the greatly anticipated all-school field day. With the last day of school right around the corner, I finally have time to reflect on how far we have come this year and what the next few years will bring for Beacon.
When we started creating individualized school programs for students in 2006, we did not expect to found a school. But as our enrollment grew, we realized that we had a singular opportunity to contribute to the educational landscape in our region. By combining one-on-one and small group instruction in the academics and arts to create unique courses of study within a small community of engaged learners, we re-envisioned what a school could be.
More than anything, Beacon is defined by our students. For such a small school, Beacon inspires pride. One of our lower school students recently pointed out to me that Beacon is his school, but it’s also Zach’s school, and Ellie’s school, and Carolyn’s school. At Beacon, there are dozens of schools, each individually designed. And yet, all of these schools come together as one—every student must go beyond him or herself to cooperate and collaborate in our dynamic community.
Next year will be another year of growth for Beacon as we move into our new campus, expand our student body, and further involve ourselves in the broader community. While we look to the future, we remain dedicated to our mission—providing flexible, creative programs for intellectually motivated students.
I invite you to learn more about Beacon’s individualized approach to education. Look for our upcoming open houses or call to set up a time to visit.
Thank you for your interest in Beacon.
