Postpartum Hair loss is very normal & will not last long. It’s temporary & would resume their normal hair growth within a year after the delivery. Now, what is the reason behind such postpartum hair loss? Let us check it out.
Causes of postpartum hair loss
Changes in hormonal balance:
Hormonal misbalance can affect one’s body in different & many ways. There is a contradiction here, hair becomes thicker during pregnancy due to the extraction of a pregnancy hormone called placenta estrogen. This leads to luscious hair. Now, after the delivery and feeding period is over, a woman starts losing the hair, which was in growth during the pregnancy.
That is why women’s postpartum hair loss after pregnancy continues only until a year is over. What people call hair loss is not the falling of hair; it is the shedding of extra hair that grew during pregnancy.
Another reason for luscious hair growth during pregnancy is due to the intake of prenatal vitamins, which aids in hair growth.
Telogen phase during pregnancy:
During pregnancy, a woman goes through the telogen phase and enters the dormant cycle, which promotes less hair growth. Then after Delivery, the women undergo telogen effluvium phase which is the reason behind hair fall out.
Thyroid
in many cases, interactive thyroid or hypothyroidism has also been pointed out as a reason behind hair loss. The similarity here lies in the symptoms, which are experienced by a woman during pregnancy & the postpartum period, which is a symmetry to those of thyroid symptoms. In such cases, diagnosis & treatments on the thyroid are required.
How to deal with postpartum hair shedding
A woman must remember that her hair shedding phase is temporary and will return to its normalcy within a few months. One must discuss with the medical practitioners to continue with some vitamins especially during breastfeeding & which food to be included in the diet which would aid in stopping hair loss.
Intake of lots of vitamins & nutrients through fruits & vegetables. Washing & brushing hair must be gentle One must avoid tight wrapping of the hair or fasten it with tight hair accessories.
Avoid the use of a hairdryer. One must be patient & avoid stress. As stress is yet another reason for hair loss.
Hair cycles undergo several stages. All these stages last from several weeks to a few months. However, hair loss due to any of the phases is spontaneous hair replaceable. During pregnancy, the rise in the level of progesterone &estrogen, hen when the placenta is removed after delivery, then there is a drastic fall in the level of the two. Another hiped hormone during pregnancy is prolactin. All these severe up & low notches in the levels of hormones leads to hair loss, which is very natural, & no way out.
